Wall, Window, Column, Fridge, Forme Cut, Printed Decals … the list goes on. Decals are popular for all sort of reasons but mainly because they are a fairly inexpensive way of creating a short term change to your wall or window space or any applicable space really, could be applied to a box, a fridge, and we all also do big decals for cars and buildings. They enable you to personalise your space. But the tricky part is finding something you would like to put on your wall. There are plenty of businesses out there selling their wares but not all is good in decal land. So here’s a couple of my favourites …blik surface graphics have plenty to offer and show great examples of their work on their blog. If you are looking for something that combines rich graphics, textures, patterns, text and photographic imagery then check out Harmonie Interieure and in particular their photo stickers that are quite amazing, just click and go into their site. If you want to create your own their are plenty of free vector graphics out there but the good stuff is not always so easy to find. A great resource is Go Media and their Arsenal range. You can pretty much purchase their work at a very reasonable cost – vector graphics, brushes, textures and fonts and use them in any application both personal and commercial without fear of copyright breaches. They sell their range in packs but you can buy an individual set also. The range is huge with something for everyone and their GoMediaZine (their blog) is pretty cool with lots of tutorials and freebies …. Check out their work at GoMedia for more ideas. by the way, Go Media (Arsenal 2) have just upgraded their website and they have a vector pack available for the Grand Opening priced at $USD 1 dollar but just for today …
So where do we fit in; well designers tend to come to us with finished artwork files that we then forme cut out of coloured vinyl or print as a graphic decal think wallpaper, wall skin, etc… If you know what you want we can produce the artwork for you and there’s plenty more to come in 2009 but for now a few examples of decals …
And finally 3M have just developed a vinyl that can be applied to textured surfaces – will need to trial first but it will have many applications in both the art and signage worlds …
