Kevin first time, Keith second. Sorrrryyyy KEVIN! If it makes you feel better my named is usually spelled with one 'l'. Some of my closest friends still spell it this way, so I know how you feel. Am usually pretty good at the spelling so this is embarrassing. My kids would love it though because I am always telling them how I was the Grade 3 Spelling Bee Champion.

I do note that there are no spelling mistakes in your copy above.

I think I was excited more than rushed about you guys noticing the bike on the website. I am double checking now ...

Dear Allison

This is K E V I N ..... not "Keith". For heaven's sake, after nearly two decades of living in Scandinavia, and people misspelling my name ... (deep sigh)

But the same used to happen in Melbourne when I established and ran an art gallery for ten years. The only way I could get copy writing for magazine ads, news papers etc, printed without mistakes was to supply my own camera-ready bromides ..(technology before your time possibly)... by standing over the operator to make sure it was done correctly.

Even though my website awaits content, from me, at least I have full control of everything. (It's only a temporary site, whilst I build a new multilingual version.)

I guess it was a simple mistake by a stressed Allison-in-the-fast-lane , a modern multi-tasker.

Take it easy.

Cheers, Kevin

It puts a smile on my face when I see this bike and I have been seeing it a lot lately. Fantastic to get this info from you and Keith. We very much think the hand painted signboard is spiffo. Thanks for the comments!!

Hello Allison! I am the owner/rider of this Delivery Bike (actually not restored, but brand new from the manufacturer - Pashley Cycles, Stratford, UK). This bike is made in the old style of Butcher's or Grocer's delivery bike and is well-suited to small delivery tasks around Williamstown and nearby suburbs, thanks to the mainly flat terrain. The wicker basket is made from genuine Somerset coppice willow. Many butchers, grocers, bakers etc., used similar bikes around these suburbs up until the 1950's when motor transport became general; in fact, the sight of my bike has reminded many senior citizens of their first jobs! The signboard on the Williamstown bike was hand-painted, both sides, with considerable enthusiasm, by a local signwriter.
Best wishes to all,
John.

Greetings from Norway. It's not the bike that has been around Williamstown for 100 years, but the owner, .. well at least 6/10 of a century, and I've known him for most of that time. As you can see by the restoration of the delivery bike, he is an asset to the city. When next Downunder, we'll be meeting for a Williamstown cafe crawl, for the best latte, hopefully a spanakopita and some photography around town. For the event, he has another bike waiting for me, a WW2 folding paratroopers' bike. Cheers, Kevin.

Thanks Anali, Kouji and Courtney for your lovely comments. Have been trying to work out the best way to make a contribution, the list of the 88 things you can do on the blog action day site was helpful, but being in business I think the Kiva (microfinance) would be the way to go. Have been having a good look at their site and think I may just join the Australian team (thanks Kouji for link)!

This is a beautiful post. You are right that too often we forget about the poverty that lives just around the corner, concerned only with our own lives. I love the way you plan to "start at home."

It is really exciting to me to be part of this very inspiring day.
